Braids done at Casa should last you 2 to 4 weeks, but a lot depends on what you do at home. You sweat more in Dubai, so it matters even more here. This is what our braiders tell people.
1. Keep your scalp clean
Sweat and dust build up fast here. Once or twice a week, use a light shampoo or scalp cleanser that doesn't leave residue. That stops buildup, flakes and itching.
Put the shampoo on your scalp, not along the braids. You get less frizz that way.
2. Oil your scalp
A dry scalp is the main reason braids itch and start looking tired.
Every 2 to 3 days, put a light oil like argan, jojoba or coconut straight onto the parts.
3. Cover them at night
Cotton pillowcases soak up moisture and rub against the braids. Sleep in a silk or satin durag, bonnet or scarf.
Of everything here, this does the most to keep them looking fresh.
4. Don't over-wash
Too much water and scrubbing loosens the braids and makes them frizzy.
If you train every day, wipe your scalp with witch hazel instead of washing it every time.
5. Tidy the edges
The braids can still look fine while the hairline grows out and makes the whole thing look old. A quick line-up or fade around the edges sorts it.
6. Take them out on time
Two to four weeks is about right. Leave them longer and the new growth tangles, which can damage the roots when they come out.
We can take them out for you. Braids Undoing is from AED 60 and includes a wash.
Questions we get asked
How often should I wash my braids?
Once or twice a week, scalp only, with a light shampoo that doesn't leave residue. Massage the scalp rather than scrubbing the braids.
How long can men keep braids in?
Two to four weeks. Past a month you risk breakage and damage at the roots.
