A Barber's Guide to Men's Haircut Styles

By the Casa Barbershop team · Updated · 6 min read

These are the styles we cut most weeks at Casa in Dubai Marina, with a quick note on who each one suits. If you're not sure, bring a photo and talk it through with your barber before they start.

Mullet burst fade

A rounded fade that curves around the ear, with length left at the back and texture on top.

It's a bold cut, but kept tidy it looks sharp rather than retro.

Classic slick back

Hair combed straight back with a bit of shine.

Put it with a taper or a skin fade and it works at the office and at a wedding.

Side part

A short back and sides with a clear parting line.

Easy to style, and it never looks out of place at work.

The mid part

Medium-length hair parted in the centre and left to fall naturally. Good if your hair has some wave.

It needs very little product. Kim is the one to book for this.

The pompadour

Plenty of height at the front, shorter at the back and sides.

It takes a few minutes with a dryer every morning, so only go for it if you enjoy styling.

Low skin fade

The fade goes to the skin just above the ear and stays low on the neck.

Clean, and it keeps more weight higher up.

Mid skin fade

The skin shows up to around the temples. It goes with nearly any top.

If you have never had a fade, start here.

High skin fade

Starts up near the crown, so there is a big contrast between the sides and the top.

Also the coolest option in August.

Taper fade

Only the sideburns and neckline are taken down. Behind the ear stays natural.

Tidy, without showing much skin.

Temple fade

Sometimes called a blowout. The fade sits around the temples only and the rest of the cut stays as it is.

A small change that sharpens up your beard lines.

The buzz cut

One length all over with the clippers. About as low maintenance as hair gets.

Add a Hair Line Up and it looks deliberate rather than lazy.

Cornrows

Braids close to the scalp, usually straight back.

Nothing to style in the morning for a few weeks. Your hair needs to be at least 2 inches.

Design braids

Braids in a custom pattern. Bring a picture of what you want.

Your hair needs to be at least 5 inches for these.

Questions we get asked

How do I choose the right fade?

Go by how much skin you want to show. A low fade is the most conservative, a mid fade suits most people and a high fade gives the most contrast. Your barber can help you decide in the chair.

How long do cornrows and braids last?

Usually 2 to 4 weeks if you sleep in a silk durag and oil your scalp lightly. After that the parts start to look grown out.
